This page describes our International Data Centres which were made available to limited customers in 2017 (Canadian Data Centre) and in 2019 (European Union Data Centre) for SurveyMonkey survey services.
If you are one of the customers utilizing these international data centres, your survey questions and responses from your survey takers will be stored in our cloud storage solutions in the indicated geographic region. Customers who opened accounts with us prior to the availability dates mentioned above are not able to store the questions and responses to their surveys in Canada or the European Union, and we are unable to migrate their pre-existing survey questions and responses to the Canadian or European Union Data Centres. All other account information such as login information, respondent contact information (such as email, phone number and IP address), billing details, and account metadata will continue to be stored in the United States.
Customers making use of the international data centres should be aware that certain features of the service may access the survey questions and responses from outside of the Data Centre’s geographic location in order to implement, maintain, repair, troubleshoot, or upgrade the services. For example, the tools we use to detect abuse of our services through spamming or phishing are located in the U.S. We also provide customer support and billing support from personnel located in our U.S., Canadian, European, and Australian offices, and our personnel may access your account to provide you with assistance if you contact our support teams and have not opted-out of survey-level support.
For customers making use of the European Data Centre, account information such as login information, respondent contact information (such as email, phone number and IP address), billing details, and account metadata is stored in our European Data Centre’s cloud storage. This data is not routinely stored in the United States but may be accessed from the United States for limited reasons as outlined above. Other data about your accounts such as User IDs, billing contact information, usernames and non-personal information about the account (e.g. number of seats, package IDs, account feature information and activities in the account e.g. survey deploy status) will also be stored in the United States to enable us to produce reports and facilitate customer account management.
For our customers leveraging the European Data Centre, your account information is available at the URL corresponding to that Data Centre, https://eu.surveymonkey.com, which indicates all your services and account information is being served from the European location.
For customers making use of the Canadian Data Centre, all other account information such as login information, respondent contact information (such as email, phone number and IP address), billing details, and account metadata will continue to be stored in the United States.
You can see if your survey questions and responses will be stored in Canada by logging into your account and going to the My Account page.
We encrypt your data in transit and at rest! When you and your respondents are using SurveyMonkey, your data is encrypted in transit using the latest, secure ciphers. We also encrypt your data at rest using Transparent Data Encryption.
SurveyMonkey leverages the Amazon Web Services platform and its multiple Availability Zones within the various regions. To maintain business continuity, we replicate customer data across multiple availability zones within the AWS regions in which the SurveyMonkey Data Centres reside. This approach allows us to leverage our rigorous disaster recovery plan already in place for our U.S. data centers.
